| It all began with me and my wife going to a birthday party of friends
of us.I used to be a Karmann Ghia freak before i saw the p1800.My friend told me that an
uncle of him spotted a volvo p1800 on his way through Zwitserland. He had a camper and ask
a farmer to park his camper on his property for the night.
Next morning he was up early and
walked around on the property and spotted a plastic sheet with under that the p1800. He
asked the farmer if he would sell the car. The man asked fl 5500,- guldens which is about
2500 euro's. After talking to the famer about the price, he lowerd it to fl 2500,-
guldens, which is 1150 euro's. The car was sold. But the uncle could not take the car with
him at that moment. So after returning home, he found the trouble to get the car out of
there too much. He told my friend about the car and he was ammediatly enthusiastic about
it. He called the farmer if the car was still there and if the price could be dropped a
little. The farmer agreed and so the price dropped to 850 euro's! My friend was still not
sure if he would buy the car. He just had a small business going and just bought an pld
house which also needed restaurating. He was thinking about the possiblity of parking the
car somewhere for a couple of years and then start working on it. He even went to
Wintertur to take a look at it. He told me everything and also that he had doubts about
it. I told him if he would not buy that car, we would.
And one day he stood at my door to
tell me the car was ours if we would still be interested. Offcourse we were!! We thanked
him a lot and started to make arrangements right away. We boroughed a landcruiser and
transporter of my wifes uncle and just went for it. You could say, we bought the car of a
picture! After arriving in Wintertur, i just filled in some papers and payed the man the
money. Within 24 hours we were back home!
After a closer inspection at home, we
found out that the car has been restaurated before. It was done by someone who does not
care about such an oldtimer. I have to grind everything of and weld new pieces in. The
engine ran after working on it for a day. It ran beautiful without strange noices. After
inspection the engine, we decide not to revice that. Just optinal repainting. At the
moment i am trying to get a new bottom welded in. That part is not at least easy to do.
This is my first restauration project
ever. I am doing the best i can with help from my father in law. He was a welding teacher
at a farmers school nearby, so he should know what to do. The car is almost complete.
Original hubcaps and a drivers chair is all i am missing at the moment. I previously
bought a clock and two original wheels that were missing.
I will try to keep this page up to
date if there is something to tell you all.
